The Importance of Magical Realism
The Theme magical Realism is so important and relevant to my practice magical realism is a genre fiction that is grounded within the real world. This is a theme. I thought about deeply when creating my novel. But within the theme of magical realism fantasy elements can also be considered normal for me within my Work. I think this was the idea that my main character could race anyone and maybe things would go wrong cars crash and collide but they would never be serious repercussions and he would always come out on top. I wanted to mention one of my favourite childhood books series that are based around this idea of magical realism and what made me want to make the car racing within my own novel magical. one of my favourite examples of a magical realism universe that has always inspired me as a creative and just interested me since I was a child is the “Harry potter universe” created by J.K Rowling. These books really captured a generation and were so successful because they were so accessible to any age or audience something I hope to capture within my novel by creating a big teen to young adult market. The books follow a boy called Harry whose parents passed away Mysteriously and must live with his aunt and uncle who treat him extremely unfairly, just outside of London. The real mystery starts around his birthday owls begin to deliver mass amount of post to the house that is making his aunt and uncle extremely Agitated. It all begins to take a more magical turn when his aunt and uncle make the decision to move to a remote location to try avoiding these mysterious letters that addressed to harry. One night the doorway is smashed though, and an extremely tall man appears to speak with harry informing him he is a wizard and inviting him to join Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. What makes these books so fascinating is how yet close to reality they are for example we all begin a new change of secondary school at this age. Some of my favourite elements of the series are some of these precious magical moments for example reading about the intense quidditch games that seems to be almost inspired by rugby on flying broomsticks, another is seeing a weird and wonderful wizard shopping street called diagon ally wear all wizard and witch supplies for Hogwarts can be purchased, this street inspired by the shambles in York linking back to our reality. One of the most magical places in the series for me is olivanders wand shop and the importance of the fact the wand chooses the wizard and how our imagination creates this vivid scene. Bringing it back to my own work I believe the world building of Hogwarts will always be a piece of fiction that inspires me and will continue to influence my work Especially when it comes to anything that is more fantasy based.
