Film Study - Drive - 2011
Drive was a film that I watched in the background whilst completing my illustrations for my comic as I really wanted to completely surround myself in this world of racing, the film features Ryan Gosling who played a getaway driver. The film opens its sequence by showing us a scene featuring the Driver in his own world of racing where he is most at home within this we learn how clever this driver really is as we see maps on the table and his routes are already planned and pre calculated we know this is going to be a major action film at the start of the movie when we hear Ryan list his rules of his getaway driving these being five minutes only no guns as a viewer I really liked the boldness of this. After this we meet the drivers boss Shannon who supplies him with his getaway cars one thing I noticed in the opening chase was that the camera never leaves the vehicle upon further investigation this is done by the crew to focus on the perspective of the driver, I really liked this element of in car shots and I hope it influences my comic later on in my story. Further on in the film we meet his love interest ( Irene ) another plot point I really liked about this film gives the characters a three dimensional feel. The film also features a high speed chase this being one of my favourite scenes between a Bentley and our driver who is flying round in a Mustang GT and ends with the Bentley being completely written off I really loved the cool dynamic action of this seen when watching it and I have to admit I was glued to the screen and it involves the driver rescuing a woman named Blanche out of danger . Until this point I believe that the driver in this movie thinks of himself as a good guy then there is a bloody massacre and that all changes and he begins his decent into madness my main takeaway from this movie was how emotionally complex it is and contains manny emotional and deep themes as well as the cool driving and action and I hope when creating my own work that it holds a least a hint of this.
